D.N.A and Environment

Nuclear weapons and climate change are two existential threats to our planet that require urgent and rapid action. They both put populations, the environment, its ecosystems, and future generations in danger. Climate change continues to cause uncertainty about the future of our society for many young people. Youth are becoming more conscious of the hazards and difficulties posed by the climate catastrophe as well as the chance for sustainable development provided by a solution. The climate issue presents the greatest multilateral challenge of our time and calls for unprecedented coordination and cooperation, as stressed by the UN Secretary-General.

António Guterres highlighted in his statements to the UN Security Council the necessity of strengthening partnerships within and beyond the framework of the United Nations in order to confront the specific threats to peace and security posed by the climate crisis.
Clear environmental considerations are involved in disarmament, nonproliferation, and armaments control. Environmental harm is still being done by armed warfare, military operations, and nuclear testing. Nuclear weapons have serious ecological repercussions and pose an existential danger to global peace and security. Global military actions and the manufacture of weapons account for 5% of global carbon emissions. Resources that may be used to combat climate change and promote the Sustainable Development Goals are being diverted by the world’s rising military spending.

It is obvious that arms control, non-proliferation, and disarmament are important tools for achieving climate change mitigation, safeguarding the environment, and putting people at the center of our security.
